Amsterdam Hostel Frequently Asked Questions
What are your check-in requirements?
We run our hostel in order to serve international and domestic budget-conscious travelers. Our goal is to be the best SF Hostel in the area. We welcome guests from everywhere outside of the county in which the hostel is located. If you are behind schedule checking-in, please call the hostel at 415-673-3277 to let us know so your bed isn’t given away.
When you check-in have your identification ready. All guests must have a passport (or a US government-issued ID) as well as a travel itinerary.
Travelers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Dorms are only available to guests under 18 if their party is booking the entire dorm. Parents with young children must contact us by email prior to booking.
Taxes are excluded in your booking fees and will be due at check-in. A 16.25% tax rate will be added if your rate is over $40 and/or if you are booking all beds in a dorm room.
Please note, we are unable to accommodate local residents who are attempting to relocate at this time; however, if you feel you fit into our target group and are traveling with friends please contact our hostel and see if we can make an exception.
What are your check-in and out times?
We have a 24-hour front desk, and would appreciate a notice of when you’ll expect to be checking-in. Check-in times begins at 3:00 PM. Check-out time is at 10:00 AM. We’ll be happy to hold onto your luggage when you check in or out. For check-in requirements, see the above information.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations and modifications must be made by an email 48 hours in advance by email only. Failure to do so will mean you will be charged a one night. We also have a no early check-out policy, therefore no modifications can be made at the time of check-in.
How do I get to the hostel from the San Francisco International Airport (SFO)?
Board any train bound for the Powell BART station. On the street, walk up Powell St. away from the Westfield shopping center, turn left on Sutter St., and turn right on Taylor St.. The hostel will be on the left just before Bush street.
In case you didn’t know—San Francisco has some steep hills, so if you’re not willing to walk the 1 km (0.6 miles) take a cab, or hop on the #27 bus from Market & Powell to get off on Sutter St.
A single BART ticket will cost about $15.
Shuttles arrive on the second floor of the airport, and shuttle pickups are outside the terminal in the middle island.
Shuttles range from $15-20 per person from the airport, reservations are not necessary.
We can book your shuttle back to the airport for $12-15 a person at the front desk.
Is there parking at the hostel?
There is no parking available at Amsterdam Hostel, but various street parking is available nearby. Please read all of the signs, since parking restrictions vary from street to street. Note street parking is free during the evening and on Sundays.
We can also provide you with information on nearby parking garages (typically $25 per day) when you check in at the front desk. No advance reservations are needed. We do have a white-zone in-front of the hostel that you can use when checking in and dropping off your luggage before you park.
What do you mean by “dorm room”?
We are a European style hostel, where rooms stay affordable because they are shared with other guests. At Amsterdam Hostel we welcome backpackers, couples, groups, and all travelers who are looking for an experience where they can meet like-minded travelers. Unlike most hostels, each room has it’s own bathroom. Our hostel also has private rooms if you do not wish to share your accommodations.
Will my personal belongings be safe?
Most all of our rooms have lockers for you to use. Bring a padlock with you to secure your valuables. If necessary, you can also store your belongings in the manager’s office.
Should I bring a sleeping bag?
There’s no need! Amsterdam Hostel will provide you with bedding linens, and you can request towel service from our front desk. We actually do not allow camping gear within the hostel rooms.
How do I guarantee that other members of our travel group are in the same room?
We do our very best to keep groups together, but in rare cases it’s not available. If you want to confirm that your group has beds in the same room please email us. To register a group reservation, please submit a group inquiry form.
Is there a curfew?
There is no curfew, and you may come and go as you please, but we ask that you are respectfully quiet when returning at night and do not disturb your fellow hostel-mates.
Can I bring visitors into the hostel?
Your friends are welcome to enjoy the hostel lobby and reception areas. We ask that visitors do not enter rooms for the safety of our guests.
Can I get a top or bottom bunk ahead of time?
If you have a physical restriction that requires you to have a bottom bunk, please tell our receptionists at check-in and they will assist you with this. We don’t assign beds, they are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Feel free to claim a bunk bed if that person has checked-out.
